This fall NCRD has arranged a week long diving trip to the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park in Baja California. Here is a great opportunity to get away before the Holiday season begins to an exotic, seldom-visited tropical dive resort that is close to California and relatively inexpensive to get to.

Cabo Pulmo is a small hamlet in the desert on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, south of La Paz. It is 1.5 hours from San Jose del Cabo airport and about 3 hours drive south of La Paz. In Cabo Pulmo you dive the northernmost living coral reef in the Eastern Pacific, protected in the National Marine Park of Cabo Pulmo, which was created in 1995 and comprises 17,750 marine acres. From August to December the visibility is 60-120 ft and the water temperature hovers near 80 degrees. The primary feature of Cabo Pulmo is its great abundance of fish. Huge schools of grunts, grouper in all sorts and sizes, moray eels swimming around during the day, schooling puffer fish and so on. In 2005 Cabo Pulmo was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A study released by Scripps Institute of Oceanography reported in August 2011 that Cabo Pulmo’s biomass, the total weight of living species, had increased by 463% from 1999 to 2009. “No other marine reserve in the world has shown such a dramatic fish recovery,” wrote researcher Octavio Aburto-Oropeza.

Our accommodations will be at Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort. Our package includes 7 nights accommodation (double occupancy) in a small “Eco Casita,” breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, and a two-tank boat dive each day (6 days of diving). The casitas are little palapa-style houses (<300 sq ft), most with a double bed, a single bed, a small kitchen and dining area, a nice outdoor patio and an enclosed bathroom. I stayed in one of these units a couple years ago and found it adequate in every way. There is no air conditioning, but hot summer air temperatures drop significantly by November, so we should be fine on our upcoming trip. Our trip package is based on double occupancy of these casitas. You can request to share with a friend or traveling partner, or be paired with another single traveler. The trip price includes all taxes and fees and round trip transportation from the San Jose del Cabo airport to the resort is included. Not included is a $5/day use fee to the National Marine Reserve. And of course your airfare is not included in the price.

Be advised: This is not high end accommodation. The principal draw of the resort is that it's remote from typical tourist areas, and has great diving. No air-con, possible power outages after lights out time, and other considerations should factor in your choosing this trip over others. The diving is great, but this isn't like a fancy all-inclusive beach resort holiday in Cancun.

Included:
  • Round trip transportation from Los Cabos
  • 7 nights shared accommodation
  • 3 meals daily
  • 6 days of 2 boat dives
Not Included:
  • Optional dive gear rental
  • Optional Nitrox fills
  • Optional afternoon or night dives
  • $5 per day Marine Park fee
  • Airfare
  • Airport taxes and departures fees
  • Visa and entry fees
  • Any items of a personal nature
  • Gratuities
  • Travel or dive accident insurance

Three meals a day are provided at two different on site restaurants near the dive shop. Our dive package has a preset menu for each meal and you choose one item and a beverage. Additional food and beverages can be ordered and paid for separately at the restaurants.

Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort is a certified 5 Star PADI Dive Center. I did my PADI Open Water certification work there and was very impressed with the quality of their equipment and their staff. The Cabo Pulmo Reef, which lies about 100 yards offshore, is accessed by small boats that transport up to six divers per boat. There are many wonderful dive sites ranging from 30-70 feet depth that are appropriate for beginning divers and sites that will challenge advanced divers. There is also an excellent 2-stop snorkel trip offered for $40. Additional dives (beyond the two included daily) are $45/tank. Also, Nitrox is available for $15 additional/tank and must be ordered and paid for in advance.

Getting There

Several airlines provide direct service into Los Cabos, through their US hubs. Please consult with the trip organizer before booking flights, so as to coordinate our shuttle to Cabo Pulmo.
